Featured in this lot is an original gouache signed by Navajo artist Robert Chee, untitled, of Navajo Leading A Pack Horse. Robert Chee, also known as Hashke-Yil-Cale (1937–1971) was a Navajo contemporary artist and author. He is best known for his painting and serigraphy (silkscreen printing) but he also worked as an illustrator, and weaver. Artist Robert Chee was Diné of the Navajo Nation painter. He had a short but very active career. He is noted for two-dimensional strongly decorative work with bright colors. He adhered to all the characteristics of traditional Navajo painting. He frequently used dark backgrounds on his paintings and often used gold paint. His work is very fluid and with exceptional detail and finesse. The colors are bright, but soft at the same time. Chee's work can be found in public museum collections including the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Museum of Northern Arizona, Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, Arizona State Museum, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, the Penticton Gallery, and the National Museum of the American Indian. The matted painting is in good condition, no marring noted; painted wood frame has slight scuffing, otherwise overall good condition. Measurements are 9"H x 9.25"W, frame is 21"H x 17.5"W
