Featured in this lot is an E Allen & Co. single shot vest pocket derringer chambered in .22 caliber. The pistol was manufactured from 1869 to 1871. The derringer features a nickel'd barrel and chamber, brass frame, and walnut grips. The barrel is marked across the top with "E. Allen & Co Makers". The brass frame displays a deep unpolished patina, with the barrel showing much of its original nickel finish. This distinctive and iconic derringer pistol measures only 3 3/4" long overall. The piece displays a working hammer with the trigger sticking a little. This style of derringer was an iconic personal defense weapon of the early post-Civil War years and found favor with well-heeled gentlemen, gamblers, ladies of society, as well as ladies of the evening, lawmen, and outlaws alike.
