This is a beautiful early Cheyenne feathered headdress war bonnet with buffalo hide beaded brow noted as being circa 1890 from the ex-Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection said to be from the Lame Deer Indian Reservation in Wyoming. This is a fantastic early Indian Reservation era circa 1890 to early 1900’s war bonnet headdress exhibiting a large early beaded brow band comprised of Indian buffalo tanned hide and overall, the headdress shows sinew sewing and trade thread sewing. The piece exhibits a cap showing Indian buffalo tanned hide, old felt clothe cap, and old trade clothe. The piece shows strips of old trade clothe and ermine hides dangling with hide straps having wound glass trade beads. The bonnet and trailer consist of many painted and dyed turkey feathers with red plume feathers affixed with hide glue and ends wrapped in old red stroud wool. The trailer exhibits a long stretch of old red stroud wool trade clothe and old grey wool trade clothe. The feathers have a deep, mellow patina as does the hide. The beaded brow band of Indian tanned buffalo / bison hide shows classic Cheyenne geometric beadwork done in 1800’s glass trade seed beads with background in chalk white and triangle stepped pattern in colors of cobalt, greasy yellow and medium green. Above the brow band is a row of brass trade tacks. Provenance: From the Lame Deer Indian Reservation of the Cheyenne in Wyoming from the ex-Jim Aplin collection of Piedmont, South Dakota; a small tag within the feathers is marked as such. This is truly a work of art headdress that is well kept with fabulous beadwork, nice collection history and stunning artful appearance. The piece has been well preserved with the strap being old to vintage repairs, likely altered and kept up from the Cheyenne family at Lame Deer Reservation. Overall, the piece measures 68-inches long.
