For bidding in this lot is a custom saddle, crafted by the Connolly Brothers, in Billings, Montana between 1912, and 1929. The Connolly Brothers (Jack, Andrew, and Pat) learned the ways of expert tack making from their Irish immigrant father, John Connolly. In 1907, the brothers relocated from Minneapolis to Butte, Montana, where Connolly Bros opened their first harness shop, only to move once again to Billings in 1912. This saddle in particular serves as an exceptional example of the Connolly Brothers fine work, utilizing a sturdy tree, rich caramel colored leather, and elegant pin-stripe tooling. The saddle is additionally adorned with a swell pommel, double-stacked scalloped leather conchos, and chromed steel rigging dees. The "Connolly - Billing, MONT." makers stamp can be seen on the front of the seat rise, as well as on the skirt, just behind the cantle. Overall, the saddle shows very good condition, with only subtle matting to the undercarriage, and light, scattered scuffs to the leather finish. The saddle shows supple, hydrated leather. This saddle comes to us from the estate of the late Bud Chapman, renowned Western collector, from Bozeman, Montana. The saddle uses a 14" seat.
