This is an original ambrotype photograph of General George Armstrong Custer set into a celluloid intricate small round frame. Original ambrotype photographs of General George Armstrong Custer, such as this example, are immensely rare, with four being sold at auction—the example in Heritage Auctions’ December 2012 sale for $70,000 and the two sold in Showtime Auctions’ September 2020 sale for $1,300 and the example of a young Custer in Swann Auction Galleries’ October 2004 sale for $20,000. Ambrotypes are positive photographs on glass that were first introduced in the 1850’s, replacing the Daguerreotype and of the same era as the tintype. This is similar to the photographs taken in 1865 by Mathew Brady and possibly an Ambrotype from his studio. The photograph has a slight crack in the lower right corner and the celluloid case has a chip at the center lower. The disk measures 1 3/4" across and 1/2" deep. This is a rare memento of a man history will never forget.
