Presented in this lot are Early Montana State Native American Photos, circa 1880s to 1930s. The first photograph is of Piegan Ruben and Cecile Blackboy in native dress at the Blackfeet (Amskapi Piikani) Reservation in northwest Montana, by American writer, explorer, Glacier National Park guide, fur trader and historian of the Blackfeet Indians James Willard Schultz, circa 1930s. The second photograph shows a gathering of Crow (Apsáalooke) men and women in native dress, circa 1880s-1890s, source unknown. Crow Agency is located in southeast Montana. Key historical photographers of Montana’s Indigenous tribes along with James WIllard Schultz include Richard Throssel (Crow), Fred E. Miller (Crow), L.A. Huffman (Cheyenne/Crow), and T.J. Hileman (Blackfeet), who documented tribal life, ceremonies, and portraits from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Their work, often focusing on daily life and, in some cases, with direct adoption into the tribes, provides a significant, though sometimes complex, visual record of Montana's Indigenous culture. Photographs display age tanning. Photos each measure respectively 3.875"W x 4.5"L and 3.25"W x 5.125"L, mounting boards each measure respectively 5.25"W x 7.5"L and 5.5"W x 6.375"L.
