Featured in this lot is this brass, Phomene brand fire extinguisher manufactured by Pyrene Manufacturing Company in the 1940-50s. Pyrene Manufacturing Company was founded in 1907 by a Scottish engineer who moved to the US after his fire extinguisher idea was not supported in the UK. The company became famous for its brass, portable pump extinguishers that used the chemical carbon tetrachloride (CTC), which was effective against electrical and liquid fires but proved highly toxic and was phased out around 1970. The company's history includes both a British and American branch, major contracts with companies like London General Omnibus, and wartime use in vehicles. The company was eventually acquired by Chubb in 1967. This fire extinguisher shows a brass construction with embossed lettering on the front showing the brand name, the manufacturing company and instructions on how to use and recharge it after use. It shows good condition overall with wear present from its age and use over the years. The hose has hardened from its age. No major signs of damage noted. It measures 7 1/4" L x 8 1/4" W x 23 3/4" H and weighs 18 pounds and 10 ounces.
