This is a phenomenal, authentic, original Edgar Alwin Payne (1883-1947) oil on board called "In the Misty Alps." This oil on board painting features a beautiful scene of numerous peaks of the Swiss Alps. The artist’s signature is shown in the bottom left hand corner of the painting. Edgar Payne was born in Washburn, Missouri and quickly became one of the foremost plein-air landscape painters of California in the early 1900's. He was self-taught, except for a brief period at the Art Institute of Chicago. In the 1923 Paris Salon, Payne won an Honorable Mention, which was significant recognition because of the numerous pieces of artwork that were exhibited. The condition of this oil painting on board is good, with natural wear to the frame and shown as exterior wear; there is a slight orange marking believed to be the only discrepancy. The measurements of this piece framed are 18 3/4" x 21 3/4" and the visible art measures 11 3/4" x 14 3/4". Similar paintings of content sold for $100,000 to $140,000 featured in Bonhams and Toomey & Co. Auctioneers. In the original frame.
