Featured in this lot is this after Edwin Forbes etching called " Battle of Gettysburg, PA., Friday Morning, July 3, 1863" and was originally copyrighted in 1885. The etching features a wonderfully and professionally crafted construction that shows a wide landscape scene of the Battle of Gettysburg with soldiers and cavalry mobilizing to fight with the active battle happening in the distance showing the battlefield has depth. The etching is marked at the bottom as follows:
The Battle of Gettysburg was a three-day battle that took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania from July 1–3, 1863. It was the bloodiest battle of the American Civil War, with an estimated 51,000 casualties. The Union victory at Gettysburg ended the Confederacy's last major invasion of the North. Forbes was born in New York, studied under Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, and began as an animal and landscape painter. During the Civil War, he was special artist for Frank Leslie's Magazine. Many of the spirited etchings he drew during the conflict were later presented by General Sherman to the government. They are now preserved in the War Office at Washington because of their historic value. After the war, Forbes painted landscape and cattle scenes, among which are "Orange County Pasture" (1879) and "Evening—Sheep Pasture" (1881). In 1877 he was made an honorary member of the London Etching Club. The condition of this Edwin Forbes etching is preserve with browning to the paper consistent with the age and shows some tearing to the bottom left hand corner and wrinkling throughout but otherwise shows a preserved condition. The measurements of this etching is 12 5/8" x 34 5/8". The collective weight of this etching is U4oz.
