Featured in this lot is an Ekornes Norway leather stressless chair and ottoman set, circa 1990-2000. The J.E. Ekornes Fjaerfabrikk started production in 1934, with three employees and German-made equipment. At an important furniture exhibition in Lesund, Jens Ekornes introduced the innovative concept of internal springs. The springs, which could be used in both mattresses and furniture cushions, were connected by steel coils. Then, Jens Ekornes made his way to the United States, where he worked in a mattress factory to gain more knowledge of the industry. His brothers, Martin and Leif, managed the business at Ikornnes while he was away. Then Jens Ekornes purchased American equipment for making upholstered spring mattresses. Because of this, it was possible to streamline the production process and, as a result, sell the Svane mattress for a more affordable price. Ekornes introduced its first line of lounge furniture in 1966. The first furniture producer in Norway, Ekornes, gave 'Svaneinformasjon' (Svane News), information about its goods to every household in the nation. Following this initial success, a new Ekornes catalog was mailed out directly every year. The furniture was introduced for the first time under a brand name. The public company Vik & Blindheim Mbelfabrikk AS was purchased by the Ekornes family, and it later changed its name to Svane Mbler AS. Then, in 1969, Ekornes introduced its first leather-upholstered lounge furniture and the production of mattresses was transferred from Ikornnes to Fetsund. The first Stressless® chairs were introduced to the Norwegian market in 1971. The steel department underwent a significant expansion and automation as a result of Stressless®'s success. The Ekornes Group was Scandinavia's biggest furniture manufacturer by 1977. The chair and ottoman are from the Sunrise model and show a beige colored leather and darker wood components, contrasting the light colored leather nicely. The chair can be reclined back using the black handle on the right side of the chair, and the ottoman can be adjusted as needed. The chair shows good condition with wear to the leather and some discoloration on the arm rests from use over the years, but no obvious signs of damage are present. The chair by itself measures 39" high by 30" wide and 28" deep when reclined the chair measures 45" deep, the ottoman by its self measures 16 1/2" high by 19 1/2" wide and 17" deep.*
