Featured in this lot are a Frank Bennett Fiske Fort Yates Standing Rock Reservation Photograph Collection, circa 1890s-1910, framed. Photographs include Chief John Grass ("Charging Bear", chief of the Sihasapa band of Lakota), Chief Bob Tail Bear (Stony or Assiniboine Sioux), Sioux Camp, Sioux Tepees, Sioux Indians Dancing. Both Chief John Grass and Chief Bob Tail Bear fought against Custer and the 7th Cavalry at the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876. Provenance: From the ex-C.M. Russell Museum Great Falls, Montana and John Kleinschmidt collections / O’Dell collections. The original C.M. Russell Museum tag is still present (the same tag from all of the museum displayed items) marked “1396-87 O’DELL”. Provenance: From the John Kleinschmidt collection which was on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit. Catherine A. O'Dell. An attached museum tag reads, "1396-87 O'Dell". This was on display at the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana. Included as additional provenance are original correspondences between Fiske and Kleinschmidt, E. A. Brininstool and Kleinschmidt,also Frederic Van de Water and Kleinschmidt. Frank Bennett Fiske was an early photographer born at Fort Bennett in the Dakota Territory, spending most of his life in the Fort Yates area. He was best known for his rich, detailed portraits of Native American Indians, for which he won the North Dakota Art Award in 1950. E. A. Brininstool, an acclaimed cowboy poet, was a prolific author on the subject of Indian Wars, especially on the Little Big Horn battle. Frederic Franklyn Van de Water was an American journalist and writer. He wrote "Glory-Hunter: A Life of General Custer". The photographs are titled and signed in white lettering, "F.B. Fiske". All photographs are well preserved and in good overall condition, age tanning is consistent with the photos being over 100 years old. Mounted in a grey colour wood frame, frame is in good condition. Each photograph measures 3.5"W x 5"L, frame is 15.625"W x 19.625"L x 1.5"D, collective weight is 3lb, 12oz.
