This is an original hand colored mammoth plate silver albumen photograph by F. Jay Haynes of Golden Gate and Pillar in Yellowstone National Park during the 19th Century. The image was taken around late 1870 to early 1880’s and shows the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park at West Gardner, Montana Territory and has been hand colored by Haynes and is in the original Haynes matte framing, a true rarity. The back is marked, “Water Color Photograph of Yellowstone National Park Golden Gate and Pillar East Entrance. F. Jay Haynes, Publisher, Fargo, Dak. Branch Studio, Yellowstone National Park.” F.J. Haynes or Frank Jay Haynes (F.J. Haynes) (1853-1921), aka "The Professor" was a Minnesota photographer who moved west to document the glories of the American West. He became the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railroad and the newly created Yellowstone National Park. He outfitted a Pullman car as his photography studio.
