Offered in this lot is a sublime, faceted, antique Brazilian Carnelian Agate bead necklace. Beads like this were cut in Idar-Oberstein, Germany and traded in West Africa in the late 1800s. These agates were used as ballast for ships traveling from Brazil to Germany. They were then cut by master stone cutters in the town of Idar-Oberstein for the African trade. These antique beads have traveled continents for over 100 years. These beads average 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" X 3/8". There are 19 oblong beads with faceted sides strung on raffia. The necklace measures a total of 29". These beads have a few scratches and small chips, but are tightly strung.
