The lot features a blacksmith forged iron I & H Sorby hallmarked American Indian dag / dagger fighting knife. The blade shows a double-edge dag or dagger blade with blacksmith forge hammer marks, a median raised ridge running down the center of both sides and is nicely stamped “I & H SORBY” within a long rectangle mark. This exact I&H Sorby hallmark / touchmark (touch mark) has been documented on several dag knives such as the circa 1830, I & H Sorby Dag Knife found to be authentic by the experts of Heritage and sold in their July 2022 sale. Sorby was the hallmark of John Sorby & Sons which was acquired by Lockwood Brothers Sheffield, England in 1844. Lockwood Bros. still operated out of their Arundel Street Factory but created the I&H Sorby items out of their Spital Hill Works factory. The Sorby touch-mark would be found on trade knives and dag knives which were exported to the American frontiersman and traded to the Native American Indians where they would alter the pieces to their liking. For other Sorby marked blades see the Blackfoot Sorby Dag sold in 2019 by Cowan's / Hindman for $15,360 (w/ bp) and the Cree Sorby Dag Knife sold by our company in 2018 for $12,300 (w/ bp). This knife shows a forged iron dag knife blade with hidden tang having an iron pined one piece hardwood grip covered in square shank solid brass trade tacks in band and arc symbols. The outside edge of the handle shows blacksmith file / rasp brandings burnished into the edge. The handle shows many deep etchings and cuts into the wood, some of which seem intentional. The piece has deep coloring on the tacks and wood with the blade having deep pitting and wear, having been cleaned at some point by a previous collector. The iron pin is in the center of the grip under a tack. Please examine the piece for age, origin and condition. The knife is well kept with no loose-ness, a solid piece. Measures 10.5”L x 1 7/8”W with the blade being 6”L x 1 5/8” at its widest. Total weight approximately 6 oz.*
