This is a first edition copy of "First Across the Continent: the Story of the Lewis and Clark Expedition" by the author, Noah Brooks, and published in 1901. This book features 365 historical pages nicely enhanced by black and white illustrations and a fold-out map. The story of the expedition of Lewis and Clark is one of surpassing interest. These men, with their faithful followers, were the first white men who crossed the continent of North America between the regions occupied by the Spanish and those of the people of English descent. They were the first to explore the valleys of the Upper Missouri, the Yellowstone, and the Columbia and its tributaries. Many of the red men who inhabited those pathless wildernesses looked for the first time on pale-faces when they saw these adventurous discoverers. The book is bound in green linen with gold embossing on the cover and spine, as well as black and brown artwork of a Bison head on the cover and a tipi on the spine. The book is in very good condition and has a tight spine. The book measures 5 7/8" X 8 1/8" X 1 1/2".
