Presented in this lot are three First Nations Northern Great Plains Hand Woven Basket and Mats, circa mid 1900s. The Cree and Ojibwe (Chippewa) peoples are originally from southern Canada. In the United States, they mostly live in Montana on the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation. Also known as Plateau Indians, they were semi-nomadic. The Corn Husk Mat uses a combination of coiling and twining techniques along with overlay creating shadow designs in the circular design. The Ojibwe Birch-Bark Sweetgrass and Porcupine quill floral pattern circular trivet mat involved traditions passed down from many generations. The handwoven basket incorporates plaiting and coiling, has a well-fitting lid. These baskets are in very nice condition, exhibiting intricate designs and beautiful artistic workmanship. Consistent sturdy construction noted throughout. No marring observed. Largest mat measures 10" diameter, basket is 4.25" diameter; collective weight U6 oz.
