Featured in this lot are four glass negative photos circa 1880-1910s. These negatives were produced by coating glass plates with a light-sensitive emulsion, which was then exposed to record photographic images. The subject was photographed using a large-format camera and relatively long exposure times, which frequently necessitated the subject holding still for prolonged periods of time. Following chemical development of the exposed glass plate, a negative image with reversed light and dark tones was produced. Glass negatives were favored by professional photographers of the era, especially for large-format photography, due to their high resolution and exceptional detail. The first two glass slides in this collection shows scenes from the Knox & Lincoln Railroad lines in the early West. The first photo shows numerous men standing on the back of flat train cars moving over a bridge. The second shows a train with steam coming out of the chimney coming to stop or starting to drive away. The third and fourth glass slide photos show military scenes, likely of United States troops. The first photo shows a large herd of horses as numerous men move them around or watch. The second shows two men in a camp, one sitting on a horse, while the other holds the reins. There are numerous tents set up in the background. The slides show good condition overall with some wear from their age and use over the years, but no signs of obvious damage. The slides measure from 3 1/4" L x 4" W to 3 1/8" L x 3 1/2" W.
