Featured in this lot is this original 1805 E. Jones engraved map showing the United States from Maine to Georgia (Florida is cut off) and west to the Mississippi. The map was engraved by E. Jones, and drawn under the direction of Mr. Arrowsmith & Co. Published as the Act directs Sept. 1,1805 by Longman, Hurst, Rees & Orme Paternoster Row. Aaron Arrowsmith is given credit in the inscription for creating this highly detailed and engraved map, which was printed good quality, high-rag paper, typical of the time. Several Pennsylvania towns are named but not counties, Kentucky and Tennessee are mentioned, and mountains are engraved beautifully. Although the origin of this map is unknown, it might have come from an early printing of Abraham Rees' The Cyclopedia. At the time this map was published Lewis & Clark and the Corps of Discovery had begun their expedition to discover the source of the Missouri River and navigable route to the Pacific Ocean. The map is set in a wood frame and is single matted. The map shows good condition overall with no signs of obvious damage but slight foxing noted. The map measures 10 3/8" L x 12 5/8" W, while the entire piece measures 15 1/2" L x 17 3/4" W x 1/2" D.
