Included in this lot is the book, "Frank Wildman's Adventures on Land and Water" by Frederick Gerstaecker, 1864 Crosby and Nichols publishing, translated from the original German, with preface by translator Lascelles Wraxall.
Pirate adventure; aborigines; voyages to Tonga Island, Java, Malaysia; big-game hunting, and Robinsonade elements, incorporating a lot of natural history and folklore. Gerstaecker, a German Jew and celebrated opera singer literally inspired by "Robinson Crusoe," set out by sea seeking a life of adventure, and would spend several years as a hunter and trapper in Indian Territory, North America, and even ran a hotel in Point Coupee, Louisiana, in 1842. He would later make it to the South Seas, Australia, West Indies, Egypt, Abyssinia...which would inspire some 44 books of travel or adventure both fiction and nonfiction.
