The lot features a very rare original 19th Century hidden compartment Frontiersman or Fur Trappers traveling case. The case is constructed of solid stout rift sawn oak with exquisite brass hardware and dates to the 1800’s. The box features a dovetailed lid and mitered case along with compartments within the showcase having a detailed beaded accent along the top. The front compartment can be removed to access a cavity within and upon removing the compartment you access a sliding false bottom which gives access to the hidden compartment. Hidden Compartment cases would have been used by Frontiersmen, Gold-Seekers or Prospectors, Fur Traders and other characters of the early West in an effort to hide rare objects such as gold nuggets, jewelry and money. The case is wonderfully elaborately decorated with brass strips and tacks with solid brass drop handles. The case measures 29 3/4" x 12" x 10 1/2".
