Featured in this lot is this original large study graphite drawing of a cowboy branding pen by Gary Carter born in 1939 and died in 2025. The sketch features a wonderfully and professionally crafted graphite sketch construction that shows a branding pen with cowboys attending the steers needing cut with their back up horses tied to the fence while they are working. The artist signature is in the bottom right hand corner with his artist hallmark shown next to the signature. Gary Carter (1939–2025) was an American Western artist known for his authentic and humorous paintings of cowboy life, wildlife, and landscapes of the American West. He gained valuable insight into cowboy life during his time as a resident artist at Sun Ranch in Montana. A member and past president of the Cowboy Artists of America (CAA), Carter was also adopted into the Crow Nation in 1991, taking the name "Eagle Man". His work is characterized by strong narratives and a deep appreciation for the history and spirit of the West. The condition of this framed sketch is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage and shows a well preserved overall condition. The measurements of this framed sketch is 19" x 27" and the visible artwork measures 10 1/4" x 18 1/4". The collective weight of this framed artwork is 7lb 4oz.
