Featured in this lot is this George Lawrence Co. Saddle out of Portland Oregon circa 1940's. The saddle features a wonderfully and professionally crafted leather construction that shows magnificent basket weave tooling to the skirt and the fenders and along the leather adorning the swells of the saddle and shows a cushioned leather wrapped seat with texturing to the top and on the back of the seat is marked as follows: The George Lawrence Company - Portland, Oregon, U.S.A. The saddle also has double leather conchos, chrome dees, and a leather wrapped horn. The monel stirrups show leather wrapping and a wooden frame and includes a leather back cinch from Devore Saddlery and is marked as follows: Devore Saddlery - Helena Montana; with a braided rope standard cowboy front cinch. The George Lawrence Co was originally founded in Portland, OR in 1857, by Samuel Sherlock to outfit the settlers and army posts in the remote sections of the Northwest at the end of the Oregon Trail. Throughout the 1860s, the United States cavalry in Washington relied on the firm for supplies. Sherlock’s brother-in-law George Lawrence, a relative of August Buermann, joined the firm in 1874 and took over 2 years later (1876) upon the founder’s death. In 1893 the Saddlery incorporated as the George Lawrence Company. In 1894 they published their first catalog selling saddles and other gear through trading posts and mercantile stores in the Northwest. About the same time, C.E. Bohlman joined the company as an apprentice eventually working there for over fifty years to become superintendent of production. Lawrence avoided custom made goods and built their reputation on quality, durability and dependability for the cowpunchers and riders who spent many hours a day in the saddle. The Lawrence family continued to run the business for over a century into the 1950s. George’s great grandson, William C Lawrence III (1933-2022) was a worthy keeper of the saddlery archives donating many ephemera and artifacts to multiple museums in Oregon. The condition of this George Lawrence saddle is well preserved with with some aging to the leather adorning the skirt and fenders with and slight wear to the hardware consistent with age but otherwise shows a well preserved overall condition. The measurements of this George Lawrence saddle is 40" x 28 1/4" x 15" and the seat measures 14" and the saddle stand measures 37 1/2" x 19 3/4" x 27".
