Featured in this lot is an original Gerald McCaan (1916-1995) painting titled, "Trapper on Horseback" circa 1960-70s. McCann attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn after finishing high school in 1934, where he studied under Monte Crews, Nick Riley, John Fleming Gould, and H. Winfield. McCann alternated between focusing on engineering and art. McCann started creating story illustrations in pen and ink for pulp magazines in 1939. Ace Sports, Thrilling Sports, Sports Story, Western Story, and Wild West Weekly all published his articles. Additionally, he created illustrations and inked comic books for Avon, Hillman, St. John, Ziff-Davis, Charlton Comics, D C Comics, Dell, American Comics, and Gilberton's Classics Illustrated Comics. He also created a number of the comics' covers. He relocated to Madison, Connecticut, in 1959, where he became a part of the artistic community that surrounded Harold Von Schmidt and the Famous Artists School in Westport, Connecticut, where he also served as a composition and landscape instructor. Gerald McCann died at the age of seventy-eight in Spring Valley on April 29, 1995. The painting shows a trapper riding on his horse as a Native American follows closely behind him on another horse. The trapper is holding his rifle in his right hand while he holds the reins with his left. He wears a fur hat, a shirt and pants with fringe and boots. The painting shows smooth, soft colors throughout and great attention to detail to the figures in the painting. The artist's signature can be seen in the bottom right hand corner. The painting is set in a gold wood frame that shows fading to the paint, giving it a rustic look. The painting shows good condition with no signs of wear or damage present. The visible art measures 29 1/2" L x 19 3/4" W. The entire piece measures 34 3/4" L x 25" W.*
