Featured in this lot are two decks of Great Northern Railway / Winold Reiss playing cards from the 1940s and 1955. The playing cards feature the work of Weinold Reiss on each card from his "Blackfeet Indian" portfolio. In all, Reiss made more than 250 original paintings of Native Americans, mostly of the Blackfeet. In later years, his artwork was used on Great Northern Railway calendars. These cards have vibrant colors and amazing details that enhance the physical attributes of each person and their clothing, and "offer an authentic record of how they looked and dressed". The first set shows "Chief Wades In The Water" on the front. On the back is a picture of a Great Northern Empire Builder 4000hp Diesel Passenger Locomotive with a mountain range in the background. The second set, "1955 Great Dome edition" shows "Chief Middle Rider" on the front with the "Great Dome" lounge car photograph on the back. The 1955 Great Northern Empire Builder was upgraded with "Incomparable" luxury, featuring new Budd-built dome coaches in May and full-length "Great Dome" lounge cars for 1st-class passengers in late 1955. These, along with the scenic route through Glacier National Park, marked the pinnacle of the train's service. This pack's numerical cards feature a silhouette / watermark of the Great Northern logo centred on the face of cards. The pack also features a "winking Rocky" (the mountain goat mascot of the Great Northern Railway) on the Joker. Both packs are complete. They show good to very good condition overall, no marring observed. Each pack measures 2.375"W x 5.625"L x .625"D, combined weight is U6.
