Available in this lot is a Great Western Arms Company "single action army" replica, chambered in .22 Long Rifle. In 1940, Colt discontinued the Single Action Army, after 67 years of uninterrupted production. William R. Wilson saw an opening in the market, and with help of the Los Angeles Rams executive Dan Reeves, and team physician Dan Fortmann, Wilson received funding to produce an almost-exact clone of the SAA, mainly for television, and movie productions. Great Western revolvers were offered in the three same barrel lengths as the original Colt: 4 3/4", 5 1/2", and 7 1/2", this example features the 5 1/2" variant. The company went out of business in 1964, and made 22,000 revolvers, and 3,500 Deringers in their 10 year run. Renowned characters who received one of these revolvers include, John Wayne, Audie Murphy, Don Knotts, California Governor Goodwin J. Knight, and Dwight Eisenhower. In addition to a blue'd finish, the revolver features hand carved walrus tusk grips, crafted by a Native Alaskan Inuit. The revolver shows roll stamping in multiple spots, reading: " Great Western Arms Co." on the top of the barrel, "22 Caliber" on the left side of the barrel, and serial number "GW - 5083" on the bottom of the frame - in front of the trigger assembly, and on the back of the cylinder. Overall, the revolver shows good aesthetic and mechanical condition, showing 65%+ blue'd finish, and a tight action.
