Offered in this lot are three (3) gutta percha, union cases with photos each. While some reputable websites refer to these cases as “gutta-percha” the term preferred by collectors is “union case” or even “thermoplastic.” They were made from a mixture of wood and shellac that was pressed into a mold. The result was a plastic-like product. The cases have molded exterior floral motifs, two with red velvet interior pads opposite the photographs. These union cases have gold gilt trim along the cable motif edge trim. Ambrotypes and tintypes are closely related historical photographs from the mid-19th century that use the same wet-plate collodion process. The key difference is the base material: ambrotypes are made on glass, while tintypes are made on thin iron sheets. Two of the union cases have front hasps, one has two (2) while the other has only one (1) by design. Overall good preserved condition. Two measure 3.125"L x 3.625W x .5"D and one is 2.375"W x 2.875"L x .5"D. Collective weight is 10oz.
