For your consideration are Vintage Original Hand-Carved Matryoshka Dolls by I. Avramenko, Signed, 1992, Moscow. Each of the ten (10) matryoshka dolls features a wonderfully and professionally crafted carved wood construction in which each doll intricately depicts a different scene around a rural town situated around a Russian Orthodox church. The striking scenes display a central image above the church, presumably a religious figure such as Jesus. Meticulously hand-painted, the colours are bold and rich. Avramenko is a highly regarded Russian folk artist known for creating unique, collectible matryoshka (nesting) dolls that break away from traditional floral patterns. Rather than stand-alone figures, a single set often tells a cohesive story. One of Avramenko's most famous creations is a detailed 10-piece set made in Moscow around 1993, which vividly depicts the daily lives, trials, and tribulations of a traditional fishing village. While traditional matryoshkas feature a matriarchal figure on the exterior, Avramenko frequently positions a prominent male figure (such as a village fisherman or father) as the largest, outermost doll.
