Featured in this lot is this mixed motive hand carved display of jumping mallards by artist Harry M. Vreeland born in 1908 and died in 1982. The display features a wonderfully and professionally crafted carved wooden and silica construction that shows a male and female mallard jumping and taking flight with life like characteristics all set to a stained hardwood base with a plaque that reads 'H. Vreeland.' Born in Syracuse, New York, Harry Vreeland spent most of his life working at Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage Beach. He later retired in 1972 after a long career as the chief engineer pf the antisubmarine division. In the same fashion as A.J. King, Vreeland began producing pairs of ducks and upland game birds starting in 1945, and continuing throughout his career at Grumman. Beginning in 1958 The Crossroads of Sports in New York City began to sell Vreeland’s miniature bird carvings, which they came to rely heavily on for their high market value. His work was noted for its high quality of painting, which was later in the 1960’s attributed to his wife Norma. The Vreeland’s continued to produce highly detailed miniature birds throughout their travels to South Yarmouth in Cape Cod, and Vero Beach, Florida during their retirement. The condition of this hand carved display is is well preserved condition with a slight malfunction to the connecting foot of the male mallard and some chipping to the wings of the female mallard but otherwise shows well preserved overall condition. The measurements of this display is 12" x 9 1/4" x 9 1/4". The collective weight of this display is 4lb 4oz.
