Included in this lot is "Pioneer of Old Oregon- Henry Harmon Spalding" by Clifford Merrill Drury. This book is a second edition and was published by The Caxton Printers, Ltd. in Caldwell, Idaho in 1936. This includes papers of a Presbyterian pioneer missionary to the Oregon Territory; it primarily consists of typescript and photo static copies of correspondence, diaries, and other papers relating to the missionary work of Spalding, his first wife Eliza Hart Spalding, and his second wife Rachel Smith Spalding. Subjects include the overland journey, the Nez Perce Indians, conditions in the Oregon Country, and the Whitman massacre of 1847. Some original letters written by Henry and Rachel Spalding and others are included. The book is bound in blue with gold embossing of Spalding on the cover. Inside the covers is a map of the Spalding-Whitman party's trail in 1836. This book is in good condition and measures 6 1/4" by 9 1/4".
