Featured in this lot is this etching called "Battle of Shiloh or Pittsburg Landing, Tenn., Sunday, April 6th, and Monday, April 7th 1862." originally from a sketch by Henry Lovie and copyrighted in 1885. The etching features a wonderfully and professionally crafted construction that shows the battle field scene of the Battle of Shiloh . The bottom of the etching is marked as follows: Battle of Shiloh or Pittsburg Landing, Tenn., Sunday, April 6th, and Monday, April 7th 1862 - Defeat of the Confederate Forces, under Generals Albert Sydney Johnston and G. T. Beauregard, by the Federal Army under General Ulysses S. Grant - from a sketch by Henry Lovie - Premium Plate No. 5 Presented to Subscribers to "The Soldier in our Civil War." Lovie was born in Berlin Prussia in 1829. He immigrated to the United States and established himself in Cincinnati as a portrait and landscape painter, designer, and illustrator by the 1850s. The condition of this Henry Lovie etching is preserved with some significant damage to the right edge of the etching and shows browning to the paper consistent with age but otherwise shows a preserved condition. The measurements of this etching is 18 1/4" x 43 1/4". The collective weight of this etching is U4oz.
