Buel was a journalist, author, and editor whose name appeared on the title pages of fifty-four works, some of which contained from ten to fifteen volumes. He wrote a lot of adventure tales about the wilds of Africa and the American West in the late 19th century, and is said to have been in jail with the notorious outlaw Cole Younger.
