Included in this lot we have a oak and wicker round table made by Heywood & Wakefield originating from circa 1897-1921. Heywood Brothers was established in 1826, while Wakefield Company was later, in 1855. Both firms produced wicker and rattan furniture, and as these products became increasingly popular towards the end of the century, they became serious rivals. In 1897 the companies merged as Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Company, but this name was changed to Heywood-Wakefield Company in 1921. The Heywood-Wakefield Company continues to make furniture out of Massachusetts and North Carolina. This piece shows a oak table top and lower shelf. The sides and legs of the table feature woven wicker construction with ornamental twists and weaves. A piece such as this can be called a Parlor Table, round table, occasional table and can be attributed to the American Victorian style. The table shows two tags across the bottom of the shelf reading "Heywood - Wakefield Trade Mark" on one tag and "No. Heywood Brothers and Wakefield Company Chicago, Ill U.S.A.". The piece shows good condition overall with some light wear across the top from use. Many examples were later painted white with this rare piece showing all original natural whicker and oak finish. The table measures 30 1/2" tall with a diameter of approximately 27". A nearly identical example is the only other piece similar to the piece offered in this lot for sale, which carries a price of $5,750.
