This is a truly a historic and important hallmarked, “A.D.” and US Eagle with Shield stamped pipe tomahawk from the Great Lakes Indians dating to the late 19th-century attributed to Augustus Dietrich. The tomahawk head exhibits a hand-forged iron head that is hallmark / touchmark signed with an old script “A.D” along with an early United States bald eagle holding a US striped shield holding arrows in one claw and a US flag in the other along with a ribbon in the eagles mouth faintly marked what appears to be “E Pluribus Unum”. The script A.D. touchmark is attribute to Augustus Dietrich who was a German born immigrant who worked as a blacksmith in Wisconsin and later moved to Iowa, noted as making knives, pipe tomahawks, and axes in the late-19th-century. The head is paired with a hardwood haft handle with the bottom edge having a serrated-cut design, seen on other Great Lakes and Woodlands examples. Likely from the Chippewa / Ojibiwa in origin. The haft shows some minor damages and wear and shows brass trade tacking with some remnants of black paint on the club and tacks, clearly seen on the smoking tip. Likely a very early handle, possibly replaced, but unsure. The head shows some wear and slight pitting, with nice even coloring and truly displays well. The head measures 7.75-inch long by 4-inches wide across the blade, total length of 20.5-inches long.
