Featured in this lot is this 1903 first edition, Volume II of "History of Early Steamboat Navigation on the Missouri River" by Hiram Martin Chittenden. Chittenden presents La Barge's life in chronological order interspersed with topical analyses of various themes, e.g., the types of river craft employed in the fur trade, the art of steamboat navigation, the use of the steamboat in the fur trade, a description of the Indians of the Missouri Valley, and the role of the United States Army on the Missouri. This book is Volume II (missing Volume I) and shows a blue hard cover with gold gilt lettering on the spine reading, "Early Steamboat Navigation on the Missouri River / H. M. Chittenden / Vol. II / Francis P. Harper". The book also includes a map and illustrations throughout. It shows good condition overall with some slight wear to the spine and corners of the book but no obvious signs of damage are present. The interior pages show good condition as well with no foxing present. The book measures 9 1/8" L x 6 1/2" W x 1" D.
