Offered in this lot is, "History of Spirit Lake Massacre" by A. Gardner, 1910. In 1857, a group of Santee Sioux attacked and slaughtered dozens of frontier settlers in Iowa in revenge of the murder of Chief Inkpaduta's brother, Sidominadotah, and Sidominadotah's family by Henry Lott. Near Okoboji and Spirit Lake, these tribal men took captive four young women, the most famous was Abbie Garner of whom numerous stories were eventually published. This story, published under the title "History of the Spirit Lake Massacre and Captivity of Miss Abbie Gardner” is considered one of the last works in the United States in the literary genre known as captivity narratives, dealing with the holding of European Americans by Native Americans, and tells of the experiences being held hostage by the Sioux. This was the last attack of Native Americans against settlers in Iowa. Historians have considered it a foreshadowing of the Sioux uprising in Minnesota in 1862.
