Featured in this lot is this collection of Hopi Tradition Hemis and White Ogre pair Kachina dancers. There are a total of two stands and three Kachina dancing dolls in this collection. The first is separate and is a depiction of Hopi Tradition of Hemis with a story teller headdress of a structure with grey, red, and yellow paint; and shows rabbit fur construction to the legs and arm bands with a feather and dancing wand in his hand. The bottom is marked as follows: Hemis - Action; The Hemis (or Hemis Katsina) is a major Hopi spirit being associated with fertility, bountiful harvests, and the bringing of rain. The second stand shows two White Ogre Kachina dancers on the same shield with traditional white painted bodies with rabbit fur adorning the torso and the heads of the Kachina dolls with depicted dancing wands and both featuring hide pants of leg adornments. The bottom of the shield is marked as follows: White Ogre - 402-492 - V. MTZ - 100; The White Ogre, known as Wiharu in Hopi tradition, is a feared Katsina (or Kachina) spirit acting as a disciplinarian to teach children proper behavior. Appearing in pairs during the Powamuya Ceremony, they accompany the Soyok Wuhti (Ogre Woman) to collect food, threatening to eat children who are lazy or disobedient. The condition of this collection of Kachina dancers is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage and shows a well preserved overall condition.
