Featured in this lot is this Hopi Polychrome Wicker Basket Plaque, circa 1940s, with geometric designs. In the northeastern portion of Arizona, is located the Hopi Reservation. Within the Hopi Reservation are three mesas which serve as home. Hopi arts and crafts are often influenced by their mesa of origin: the First Mesa famous for pottery, the Second Mesa for coiled basketry, and the Third Mesa for wicker basketry, weaving, kachina doll carvings and silversmithing; the women of the Third Mesa are known for their wicker plaques, using locally growing rabbit brush, yucca, sumac, willow, dune brush, and galetta grass. The plaques are shallow basket trays used for ceremonial meals. Oftentimes, designs from nature, geometric, and Kachina are used. Hopi basketry and wickerwork are recognized for their quality and beauty. This wicker plaque is in good overall condition, the rim weaving is loose in places, otherwise the plaque is structurally sound. Colours are distinguishable the designs are striking. No other obvious marring observed. Measures 11.5"W diameter
