Featured in this lot is this wood carved Kachina of "Shalako", done by Native American Hopi artist Stacy Talahytewa Jr. in the 1980-90s. Stacy is a Hopi Pueblo Kachina / Katsina doll carver who has been active in Arizona since the 1950s. Other than his Kachina carvings, he is known to create rattles, bows and other sculptures. This Kachina doll depicts Shalako, a sacred, towering messenger spirit in Zuni and Hopi cultures, representing rain, fertility, and new beginnings. Often appearing as a 7-8 foot, long-haired, shoulderless figure in ceremonies, Shalako acts as a bridge between gods and humans. These beings bring blessings during the winter solstice and are honored in annual dances. This piece shows colors of orange / red, yellow, cyan, light blue, yellow, black and white. The bottom of the piece is marked reading, "Stacy Talahytewa Jr. -Hopi- Shalako". It shows good condition overall with little wear present and no signs of damage noted. It measures 5 1/2" L x 5 1/4" W x 14 3/8" H and weighs 8 ounces.
