Featured in this lot is a limited edition giclee on canvas called "Grandfather Prays to Sun," from American artist, Howard Terpning, born in 1927. The artwork features a wonderfully and professionally crafted limited edition giclee on canvas construction. The giclee on canvas shows a lone Native hunter sanding on a rock cluster with rifle in hand staring out into the distance. The artwork is signed in the bottom right hand corner and is numbered 50/200. “Blackfoot warriors often traveled great distances on foot,” says Howard Terpning. “There are accounts of men walking as far south as Mexico (the 'always-summer land') to obtain horses. A lone warrior might decide to explore an unfamiliar part of the country; travel alone and on foot to seek out and avenge an enemy or to perhaps steal horses from that enemy. Whatever this man’s reason was for walking a great distance we can only speculate, but he had the survival skills and stamina to accomplish just about anything he set out to do . . . provided he avoided enemy war parties.” Howard Terpning (born November 5, 1927) is an American painter and illustrator best known for his paintings of Native Americans. Around 1974, Terpning began to tire of commercial work and decided to follow his interest in the American West and Plains Indians. He began to transition into fine art by creating paintings and selling them in Western galleries. The first paintings sold for $2,000 to $2,500. After three years he left Connecticut and the commercial art world and moved to Arizona to devote himself entirely to painting the American West. Within two years he was elected to both the National Academy of Western Art and the Cowboy Artists of America (CA). In the 22 years he was an active member of the CAA, Terpning earned 42 awards for his work. The condition of this giclee on canvas is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this giclee on canvas are 38"L x 26"W.*
