For your consideration is this 1932, cast iron Howe Scale Company postal scale. The Howe Scale Company originated in Brandon, Vermont, when John Howe Jr. took over patents from Strong and Ross in 1857, and was known for its innovative ball-bearing scale design that improved accuracy. In 1870, the company moved its operations to Rutland, Vermont, a move driven by the desire to be on a railway line for better transportation of its heavy products. By 1900, the company was the largest employer in Rutland, with nearly 800 workers at its peak, but after WWII, a slow decline began. It finally closed in 1982. The scale shows a cast iron construction with a brass slide and counter weight. It is marked on the back with a logo sticker and has raised letter on the front reading, "Howe Scale Co. / Rutland, VT. / USA". It shows fair to good condition with wear present from its age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. It is still in working order. It measures 18 5/8" L x 4 3/4" W x 6 7/8" H and weighs 7 pounds and 14 ounces.
