The lot features an older, large spontoon pipe tomahawk with beautifully beaded hide drop, likely from the Sioux in origin. The piece features a hand-forged head with large, flaring kite-shaped spontoon head having wide, upward curled basal processes. The blade shows three large diamond shaped cut outs as well as raised moldings on the tear drop eyelet / eye hole as well as raised stylized section on the eye hole with large, tall and vase shaped turned bowl. The head ias attached to a later ash wood haft handle which is adorned with later added brass covered metal tacks and adorned with file branding. At the bottom is an older Buffalo / Bison Indian tanned hide drop with blue stroud trade clothe and frilly Buckskin Indian tanned fringes at the bottom. The beadwork shows medium blue, red white heart and cobalt glass trade seed beads with a fantastic Buffalo Track or Horse Track pattern. The beadwork is sinew sewn. Similar Plains Indian pipe tomahawks with large, diamond-shaped cutouts can be seen in Peterson’s tomahawk book and the Hartzler & Knowles tomahawk book. According to Native American experts like Doug Diehl of Skinner Auctions, whose youtube video examining a similar piece several years ago on “Antiques Road Show” states the horse tract design in the beadwork are a well documented art feature attributed only to warriors. The head appears to be an older example and has been extensively cleaned by a previous collector. From the Ted Levy collection. Head measures 12.25”L by 4”W. The entire tomahawk without the drop is 27.25”L. The drop is 24”L by 3.5”W.
