Included in this lot is a U. S. Civil War Book Collection including: "Frank Leslie's Illustrated History of the Civil War", by Frank Leslie, 1895. Henry Carter (1821-1880) was an engraver, illustrator, and publisher of family periodicals. As an artist for the Illustrated London News, he signed his work as "Frank Leslie" in order to maintain his anonymity. He legally changed his name to "Frank Leslie" in 1860. When he died in 1880, his widow Miriam, legally changed her name to "Frank Leslie" and took over running "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper" as president. This brown cloth bound gold gilt stamped illustrated hardcover is in poor condition, the rear board is missing, the front board is detached, fading, scuffing and staining exhibited to cover. The pages are uncollated, exhibiting age tanning throughout. Measures 11"W x 16.25"L x 1.25"D. Also included in the lot are nine (9) Civil War battlefield handbooks from the National Park Service Historical Handbook Series, 1961: Antietam, Chickamauga and Chattanooga, Fort Sumter, Gettysburg, Manassas (Bull Run), Petersburg, Richmond, Shiloh, Vicksburg. All booklets are in nice condition. Each measures 5.75"W x 9"L. Also included is the booklet "Battlefields in Dixie Land and Chickamauga National Military Park" 1928, published by the Nashville Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway and Western & Atlantic Railroad, with description of the important battles fought along these lines and the story of the engine "General." Booklet is in nice condition. Lastly is included "People's Pictorial Edition The Blue and Gray A History of the Conflicts During Lee's Invasion and Battle of Gettysburg", containing colored maps and complete roster of the two armies. Being for the most part contributions by Union and Confederate officers condensed and arranged for popular reading by Prof. J. Warren Gilbert, 1922. Book is in nice condition. Measures 6"W x 9"L.
