Included in this lot are signed "Indian Trade Relics: Identification & Values" by Lar Hothem, Collector Books, a division of Schroeder Publishing Co., Kentucky, and, "Plains Indian Sculpture A Traditional Art from America's Heartland" by John C. Ewers, Smithsonian Institution Press. "Indian Trade Relics" has over 1,150 color photos of actual artifacts hundreds of years old, each with accurate and detailed captions. Subjects include glass beads, cloth, ornaments, knives, firearms, traps, and axes. The A. H. Gottschall collection has its own chapter. There are also gunflints, arrowheads, tomahawks, kettles, and miscellaneous tradegoods. Highly interesting facts and incidents about early traders and their times are mentioned, and photos and information have been contributed both from top collectors and specialized museums and auctions. In addition to writing the "Arrowheads" chapter of the Time-Life Collectibles Series and frequently contributing to the Columbus Dispatch Sunday Magazine, Lar Hothem (1938-2006) was a longtime contributing editor to "The Antiques Journal". Lar developed a lifelong passion for collecting, researching, and writing about artifacts from North American prehistoric Indian cultures while growing up on the farms of the Hothem family. He began a successful writing career in 1976 and quickly rose to prominence as one of the nation's foremost experts on acquiring artifacts of North American Indians. More than 35 of his books on identification and pricing have proven to be valuable for amateur archaeologists as well as beginning and experienced artifact collectors. Lar contributed frequently to the Ohio Archaeologist, Prehistoric Antiquities Quarterly, and Indian Artifact Magazine. "Plains Indian Sculpture" art expert Ewers visited 150 museums and private collections during 20 years of research to document this "long-neglected three-dimensional art." In this comprehensive book, Ewers identifies by tribe, and sometimes by individual, previously unknown or mislabeled pieces. Shows examples of pipes, effigies, war clubs, bowls, spoons, and whistles, discusses themes and carving techniques, and looks at the place of these objects in the Indians' culture. He groups pieces by types and uses, shows the sculptor's attitude toward his subject, and summarizes historical periods of sculptural activity. This is the definitive work on Plains Indian sculpture.
