The lot features a 19th-century U.S. Indian Wars period Anson Mills Dog-Head woven cartridge belt with loops holding original antique .45-70 ammunition. The Mills dog head cartridge belt, also known as the Mills Woven Cartridge Belt and the Dog Head Cartridge Belt, was developed by Anson Mills, who was an officer in the infantry regiment of the U.S. Army during the Plains Indian War. Mills’ improved cartridge belt became popular shortly after the U.S. Civil War in the late-1800’s and was adopted by the U.S. Army. It could hold up to 50 rounds of government .45-70 caliber ammunition as well as .30-40 Krag, .30-06 and .38-55 ammunition. The brass dog-head buckle-shield is in excellent condition without dents etc. The corresponding adjustable brass clasp end is marked “MILLS WOVEN CARTRIDGE BELT CO.” over “SOLE MAKER” over “WORCESTER, MASS.” Overall as adjusted for length measures 38” (could be adjusted for longer length). All in excellent lightly used condition with minimal staining or discoloration from age. The vintage cartridges have several different headstamps, mainly “W.R.A.” (Winchester), “REM-UMC” (Remington Union Metallic Cartridge Co.), “WESTERN” and “PETERS.” A truly great display item to go with any antique or reproduction .45-70 caliber rifle or carbine.
