Presented in this lot is a colour lithograph of the 1896 Charles M. Russell oil painting, "Indians Discovering Lewis and Clark", Russell's bison skull hallmark & date located on the bottom left edge. "In this fascinating oil study, the artist, whom J. Frank Dobie once characterized as "the most graphic art historian of the Old West", makes a sardonic reversal of an accepted point of view. Most historians and artists would have given pre-eminence to the fabled explorers, first to penetrate this uncharted wilderness in their epic 1804-06 "tour of discovery". But Charlie Russell saw it from the Indians' point of view - the white men were the intruders who they had "discovered" passing through their ancestral lands!..." (Michael Kennedy, Director, Montana Historical Society, Helena, Montana). Charles M. Russell (1864-1926) also known as Charlie Russell, C. M. Russell , and "Kid" Russell, was the "other" artist (besides Frederic Remington) who chronicled life in the Wild West. Unlike Remington, Russell settled permanently in the west (Montana) and wholeheartedly embraced everything life there had to offer. He was a "real" cowboy, lived with a mountain man and was an adopted brother of the Blackfoot tribe. His oils, watercolors and bronzes reflect an intimate knowledge of his subjects, and no one was more surprised than he when they began fetching high prices. This wood framed matted colour lithograph is in good overall condition, no marring noted. Stained wood frame is in good overall condition, slight scuffing exhibited along frame edges, no other obvious marring noted. Visible art measures 11"W x 13.75"L, frame is 15.75"W x 18.75"L x .75"D
