Featured in this lot is this Iroquois tribal beaded change purse circa 1900-. The change purse features a wonderfully and professionally crafted trade cloth and beaded construction that shows a variety of trade seed beads that include sky blue, deep translucent blue, chalk white, translucent, pink, medium translucent red, and green. The change purse shows decorated flaps and floral depictions on the flaps and body of the change purse. The Iroquois lived mainly in Ontario, upstate New York, and some sections of Pennsylvania. An established group, they settled near lakes and weren't as nomadic as other Native American tribes. They did move every ten years or so not to deplete the wildlife of one area too quickly. The Iroquois, also known as the Five Nations, and later as the Six Nations from 1722 onwards; alternatively referred to by the endonym Haudenosaunee are an Iroquoian-speaking confederacy of Native Americans and First Nations peoples in northeast North America. The condition of this Iroquois change purse is preserved with some fading and wear to the top of the purse and also shows some wear to the trade cloth covering.
