For your consideration is an original J.J. Audubon drawing titled "Rose-Breasted Grosbeak" engraved, printed, and colored by H. Havell, London 1833 for the famous book "Birds Of America". John James Audubon was an American artist, naturalist, and ornithologist. The art shows excellent attention to detail and wonderful coloration. The lithograph is marked "No. 26" and "Plate CXXVII" across the top. It is marked across the bottom, reading "Rose-Breasted Grosbeak- Fringilla Ludoviciana bonap male1, femal 2, young in autum 3, young 4, Ground Hemlock Taxus”. This is an original lithograph, published in 1833 by master printers. John James Audubon's "Birds of America" is a portal into the natural world. Printed between 1827 and 1838, it contains 435 life-size watercolors of North American birds (Havell edition), all reproduced from hand-engraved plates, and is considered to be the archetype of wildlife illustration. Nearly 200 years later, the Audubon prints are coming to life once again with collectors. The artwork is set in a beautiful wooden frame of a black and red bamboo style. The visible art measures 15 1/2" X 19" and the frame measures 17" X 20 1/2". This piece is in good condition.
