The lot features an exceptional Early American Bowie trade knife manufactured by J. Russel & Co. from Green River Works. The knife shows the "J. Russell & Co. Green River Works" hallmark parallel with the hilt. John Russell founded his namesake cutlery circa early 1830's and by 1836 he moved the factory location to the Green River Massachusetts area. A fire delayed the factories success, but by circa 1840 with the help of Henry Clapp the factory was rebuilt and christened the "Green River Works" with all knives produced here hallmarked, "J. Russell & Co. Green River Works." This knife dates to post 1840 in the 19th century and is truly an excellent piece. The knife shows a unique bowie knife design with silver like hilt, and Stag Antler two-piece grips or handle having three copper rivets or studs securing them. The piece comes with an early added sheath having a basket weave design (an early sheath thought to have been a later addition). This is truly a rare authentic original bowie knife that would add to any Early American Bowie Knife collection. The knife, when inserted into the scabbard, measures 11 1/4" long, and 2 1/8" wide.
