This is an original signed oil painting on canvas from renowned artist, James Knox (Scottish/New York, 1866-1942). James Knox was a distinguished turn-of-the-century painter known for his brilliantly colored landscapes and seascapes and historical military scenes. Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1866, Knox immigrated to the United States and settled in Brooklyn, New York, where he painted tranquil landscapes in a sophisticated Tonal-Impressionist style. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Salons of America and the Panama Pacific Exhibition of 1915. His paintings are now featured in institutions throughout the United States, including the Bennington Museum in Vermont and the Springville Museum of Art in Utah. This painting is correctly signed James Knox in the lower left corner and is titled on the brass plaque “Long Island Scene” circa 1889 showing a wonderful Long Island, New York landscape in a classic impressionistic styling. The painting is well kept with a slight spot of loss on the right side, slight imperfection down the center. In a gilt gold wood small antique frame with a brass plaque appropriately marked. The back is marked James Knox by a previous collector with a $4,400 price Davenport mark, as well as a small tag also marked James Knox and a price of $4,130. Provenance: From the Henry and Jean Sjaardema Art Collection. Artwork canvas measures 11 1/8” by 14 1/8” and the frame is 13” by 16”.*
