For your consideration is a collection of two books by James Willard Schultz. J. W. Schultz (1859–1947), or Apikuni, was an author, explorer, Glacier National Park guide, fur trader, and historian known for his historical writings of the Blackfoot Indians in the late 1800s, when he lived among them as a fur trader. He operated a fur trading post at Carroll, Montana and lived among the Pikuni tribe during the period 1880-82. He was given the name Apikuni by the Pikuni chief, Running Crane. Apikuni in Blackfeet means "Spotted Robe." In 1907, Schultz published "My Life as an Indian", the first of many future writings about the Blackfeet that he would produce over the next thirty years. Schultz lived in Browning, Montana. The first book is a rare, 1913 First edition of "The Quest Of The Fish-Dog Skin", publisher Houghton Mifflin Company, The Riverside Press. There are numerous illustrations throughout the book by George Varian. "The Quest of the Fish-Dog Skin" is a story of the adventures of two boys, an Indian boy and a white boy. These two set forth from the lodges of the Blackfeet, in company with an older Indian who acts as their guide, philosopher, and friend, on a quest to the salt water to find the medicine-animal that is called "fish-dog". One of the boys knew from books this was some sort of a seal. This boy was, in fact, J. W. Schultz, whose first book, "My Life as an Indian," was published in 1914. As a boy and young man he lived with the Indians on the upper Missouri in the days before the white man had penetrated the far West, and his writings about the Indians are based upon an intimate knowledge of their native life. The second book is "The Trail of The Spanish Horse", 1922. This book is also illustrated by George Varian. The clothbound stamped hardcovers are in overall nice condition with tight bindings, scuffing exhibited on edges. Intact pages have age tanning and slight foxing throughout. Respective measurements are 5"W x 7.5"L x 1.25"D each, combined weight is
